Valerie Quinlan (1937-2021)
Palmette
Sterling silver pin, c. 2010, 2 ½” x 2 ¾”

Of this pin, Quinlan wrote, “This palmette design, sculpted in silver, is adapted from a decorative reflector on an oil lamp.  The lamp was buried in the ruins of Pompeii following the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79.  The original, in gold, is now in the Museo [Archeologico] Nazionale, Naples, Italy.”

Valerie Quinlan (1937-2021) specialized in unique designs in sterling silver.  Many of her creations were inspired by the ancient and antique world, and occasionally by mythology.  Her work has been displayed in boutiques and galleries in New York City, Princeton, New Jersey, Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Peabody Museum at Yale, and the Archaeological Museum at the University of Pennsylvania.  Quinlan also designed a pin and pendant for the Archaeology Institute of America (AIA), based on their logo, the Athenian Owl.  Most of Quinlan’s energies have been concentrated in music.  She enjoyed a career as a violin recitalist and performed extensively throughout the New York area and directed the Serenade concert series on Staten Island.
