Parent took this photo of Joan Baez on August 28, 1963 at the March on Washington, where she performed “We Shall Overcome.” 


Robert Parent (1923-1987) was a Canadian photographer best known for photographing jazz musicians in New York City, including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, the Thelonious Monk Trio, and Charlie Parker.  He is considered to be one of the great portraitists of jazz musicians, and his photographs were often featured in music magazines and as album covers.  During the 1960s, he turned to social activism and photojournalism, and he photographed many prominent politicians and activists, including Che Guevara, Richard Nixon, and Malcolm X.
