Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Russian-French artist whose art is well-known internationally.  His first education in the arts was at the Imperial Society for the Protection of Arts in Saint Petersburg.  Considered one of the first modernists, Chagall is identified with various different artistic movements including Cubism and Expressionism, which he first engaged with in Paris.  Chagall often created within several mediums such as stained glass, tapestries, drawings, and fine art prints.  Many of his pieces visualize both the Jewish and Eastern European experience, merging various art styles to represent his background.  His work is exhibited worldwide and has been the subject of several career retrospectives, perhaps most famously at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  At the age of 97, Marc Chagall passed away in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, the country in which he had lived for nearly 30 years.
