Lecture Series, Week 4 * Business & Industry on Staten Island - Part 2

Week 4 of The History of Staten Island – Part 2, a seven-session lecture series with Patricia M. Salmon at the Noble Maritime Collection.*

Business & Industry on Staten Island - An array of products came from Staten Island between the 1810’s and the 1960’s. Everything from beer to bricks to band uniforms. Why was Staten Island chosen as the site for these enterprises? How did the Great Depression and the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge affect these concerns? Where were these businesses? These questions will be answered as we discuss the history of the American Linoleum Company, J.B. King, United States Gypsum, Jewett White Lead, Dean Linseed Oil Company, Ostwald's Uniforms, Unexcelled Fireworks, the DeJonge Paper Company and others.

Presentations will include a PowerPoint, lecture, video clips, question and answer periods, sources for future research by participants, handouts, and guest speakers.

Individual sessions $10 each; museum members $9 each

*Please note that participation in The History of Staten Island Part 1 is not a requirement for this series.
