Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) was a Japanese artist active in the 18th century.  Okyo was born into a farming community but later moved to Kyoto where he decided to pursue art.  He studied Japanese, Chinese, and Western works, and was particularly drawn to realism and natural representation.  In the 1780s he founded a school, that he called the Maruyama School, to teach his realistic style of painting.
