Cultural After-School Adventures

The Noble Maritime Collection is a museum in Snug Harbor that uses art and storytelling to celebrate the history of the
waterfront. We are delighted to present this special project called “Patterns of the Sea,” based on “The Crab who Cried Shark,” the maritime version of the classic story about the boy who cried wolf. Read the crab’s story and follow him on his adventures through the water.

Student work

Every year in the spring we enjoy partnering with PS 373 on our annual Cultural After-school Adventures (CASA) program. We create a maritime-themed mural with the students that is permanently displayed at the school. This year, through video instruction, we taught an art class called Patterns of the Sea. The students did a great job making textural art based on our original story, The Crab who Cried Shark.

Observe patterns and textures such as fishnet, scales and waves. Watch the videos on how to create the patterns, and make a 7x7 square of art using our template, or a piece of paper you have on hand.
