Longtime Staten Islander Michael J. Hanulak (1943-2017) is an award-winning photographer known for his gritty street photography and his vivid portraits of jazz musicians. From 1973 until1982 he worked for Black Star News and was a member of Magnum News, the international photographic cooperative owned by its photographer-members who have covered aspects of the past century events including wars, poverty, crime, and celebrities. Hanulak exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York, the Smithsonian Institution, the Brooklyn Museum, Staten Island Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Born on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, he moved to Staten Island as a teenager and studied at City College of New York and the School of Visual Arts. This photo of Bartyz was taken at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in 2000 where he was performing with the group Sphere.
