Alphonse François (1814-1888) learned engraving at the school of Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. He did several engravings from works by contemporary French painters and Italian masters. In 1857 he was designated an officer of the Légion d'honneur and in 1873 a member of the Institut de France. This is a rare early state of his engraving of Marie Antoinette; later he added background details.
