Lecture Series, Week 3 * The Powerful Women of Staten Island’s Past

Week 3 of The History of Staten Island – Part 2, a seven-session lecture series with Patricia M. Salmon at the Noble Maritime Collection.*

The Powerful Women of Staten Island’s Past - Join us as we honor and celebrate the untold stories and contributions of several amazing women who lived and impacted the borough. Many of these women encountered challenges, yet persevered, to accomplish their goals without many of the freedoms we now enjoy. We will examine the lives of such influential personalities as Eva Bechtel, Alice Austen, Mary Jane Irwin, Gertrude Knight Britton, Dorothy Day, Lois Mosely, Mamie Smith, Audre Lorde, Elizabeth Connelly, and Catherine "Mac" O'Callaghan.

Presentations will include a PowerPoint, lecture, video clips, question and answer periods, sources for future research by participants, handouts, and guest speakers.

Individual sessions $10 each; museum members $9 each

*Please note that participation in The History of Staten Island Part 1 is not a requirement for this series.
